Ryder cup how many points needed to win

Europe won the edition by seven full points. The United States captured its crown through a six-point victory, and Europe took the title in with a five-point victory. There will be 28 matches played at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin starting on Friday, with four matches in the foursome and four-ball formats on Friday and Saturday and then 12 singles matches on Sunday.

Europe needs 14 points to retain the Ryder Cup for another two years. In the event of a tie, the reigning champion holds on to the Ryder Cup, which is why Europe needs a half-point less than the Americans to keep the trophy.

Friday and Saturday will feature foursome and four-ball matches. There will four matches of each type on both days. Both formats require two team members per match. In foursome competition, players on the same team alternate shots. The first two days of Ryder Cup action Friday, Saturday will include split sessions with separate types of golf being played.

Golfers from the United States and Europe will compete in both four-ball action early in the day and foursomes later in the day. On Sunday, the golfers will complete in one-on-one singles matches. Below we break down each type of match you will see this week. Four-ball: Two-man teams representing each country square off against each other. Each of the four golfers plays their own ball, and the pairs choose their best score to count for the hole.

The two scores not chosen get thrown out. Foursomes: Two-man teams representing each country square off against each other.

However, the golfers must switch off hitting the same ball until it rolls in the cup. The rotation can start fresh the next hole at the discretion of each pair. There is more strategy involved here, and the U.

So one player hits the tee shot and the other will play the next shot from where the ball finishes and so on. This continues until the ball is holed out. It is a matchplay competition against the other team, so whichever duo takes the fewest shots wins the hole. Players on each team will take turns to tee off, so one will tee off from the even-numbered holes and the other from the odd-numbered holes.

In fourballs, both players from each team play their own ball, so there are four balls in play on every hole.
