Why does Sky need a telephone line? Thread starter blizeH Start date May 3, Tags sky tv sky uk limited. Sorry to ask, I've searched on quite a few sites and it's just people discussing ways around this, rather than the actual reasons as to why exactly Sky need a telephone line, and they they charge if you don't connect it even though it works fine? I just can't understand why it's a requirement, rather than an option. John Moderator. AndyCob Well-known Member.
The thing is box office will work even with the phone disconnected until you reach the credit limit set on the viewing card which stores the box office charges until it manages to phone them in. It may be different for stuff from the new Sky Store function if they are downloads as opposed to broadcast items, I'm not entirely sure and if Sky's forums are anything to go by neither are most people unfortunately. Don't Sky simply record the fact and charge you right away? You can make the order by voice call if you like, but you don't have to you can order box office films with the box as normal just as if the phone was connected even if it isn't and it will store the charges on the viewing card until the box is able to phone them in.
Remember you are not charged for a box office film until you view it, you can record them but so long as you don't watch them theres no charge, there may be differences for some of the big pay per view sporting events but that certainly how it used to wrok for films. The box then stores the charges and calls them in the next time it calls Sky rather than at the time of purchase which is why they sometimes take a long time to actally appear on your bill.
The idea being you can still order box office even if for some reason the phone line or Sky's ordering systems are unavailable but only up to the preset credit limit. Just like the grace period the boxes now continue to allow playback for even if there is no satelite signal being received. Originally if the sat signal went out even for a moment all playback functions ceased immediately which meant heavy rain could basically shut down your box entirely, now it keeps working for 90 mins I think unless Sky have changed the period again.
This is the reason for all those posts that used to appear where people suddenly got box office charges on their bills but were sure they had not ordered anything. Some of those may have been genuine mistakes by Sky but a lot of it was down to users who had ordered something without the phone connected then connected it up in some cases years later and finally the box called in the long forgotten outstanding charges.
Miss Chief Distinguished Member. I have found out that if the sky box has never been connected to the phone line and has never completed a callback then the box office can't be booked via the remote. The card can store the charge but without the telephone connected how does the order get placed and acted upon so that the item becomes viewable or recordable - how does the viewer's message get through to Sky? I - of course - don't have the line connected and if I try to order a PPV item it sticks at the point of trying to check the charge.
Sky have changed things over time and I never used box office much and haven't done for a long time and realise I left something out. The point was the order didn't have to reach sky for box office to work, the box software took it on faith that the charge would eventually be called in, it allowed you to view box office distinct perhaps from PPV simply based on storing the charge on the card for later call back.
It changed later that this would only work if the box thought the phone was connected, even if it couldn't actually succesfully make the call. This was the reason for the so called 9v trick which involved wiring a 9v battery to the phone socket to fool the box into thinking the phone connection was present which allowed the order to complete and be stored to the viewing card and the program watched even though the box could not actually call in the order.
I never use it but have always assumed that the procedure was that you contacted Sky either automatically by the connected phone line or by a voice call, first to check on the price, then to place the order, and they then sent a message from the satellite to give access to the programme, just like making a change to your viewing package, or pairing a card, or correcting a fault. When ordering the box checks for a telephone connection but doesn't actually do a callback at this stage.
The box calls sky once per month to advise of any ppv charges and only then do they get billed. What Miss Chief said, theres no sky sending a signal involved when ordering box office using the box there might be if you are ordering by voice or some PPV special I'm not sure just the box counting up the charges up to the limit on the viewing card for later call back.
