The emphasis of this four-year residency training program is on the basic tenets of obstetrics and gynecology at the bedside, in the delivery room, in the operating room and in outpatient services. There are 16 residents, four in each year of a four-year training program. The clinical area of obstetrics involves approximately 30 percent at-risk or high-risk patients seen during the antepartum, intrapartum and the postpartum periods.
The gynecological and oncological services have a large number of operative cases involving a variety of gynecological pathologies. There are specialty clinics in maternal fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, gynecological oncology, urogynecology, and pre-invasive disease of the lower genital tract colposcopy.
Each section is headed by a board-certified subspecialist and possesses the latest in technology to advance the educational goals of the resident staff as well as enhance the care of their patients. Our program takes four years to complete and is currently staffed by 16 resident physicians.
We are very please with the outcome of our recent RRC visit. The obstetrics and gynecology residency program combines the strong didactic teaching of the School of Medicine with the abundant clinical procedures of the affiliated community hospitals, Memorial Medical Center and St.
John's Hospital , offering a unique experience to residents. The breadth and depth of the faculty allow all aspects of the training program, to be taught by departmental faculty. Formal, weekly conferences are conducted by the residents and faculty. R3s will also begin to supervise junior residents for evaluation of early pregnancy and gynecologic problems presenting to the emergency department. The major focus of the 4th postgraduate year is on supervision and competent management of a resident inpatient service teams with junior residents and medical students supervision of service patients, assignment of cases, team education, liaison with attendings and staff, solving logistical issues , achievement of competence in intermediate and advanced surgical procedures, introduction to robot-assisted laparoscopic procedures, and broadening depth of understanding of medical and surgical illness in women including medical and surgical treatment options.
