Square Enix explained how XI was limited because of it being both a console and a PC game the first MMO to port over to a console hindering any chance of the actual game to render differently on better platforms.
This limitation was not present for XIV which ultimately lead players to believe that the game was designed in XI's image. XI stayed true to previous Final Fantasy titles implementing a turn-based combat system, the compelling storytelling elements, and the engaging lore present in all previous games in its family.
Compared to World of Warcraft , XI did not use a questing method for character growth or leveling but instead made use of its environment and plethora of wildlife monsters to encourage exploration. Open world content set it apart from many MMO to come after and before its release. With the installment of time spawn NM Notorious Monsters that rewarded players with rarely attainable items upon victory, XI became progressively competitive in-game.
XIV on the other hand did not have so much in common as far as content. The mechanics were shifted towards a more mobile style of combat and less emphasis on spending indefinite amounts of time camping NM. Very rarely did players see a reference to older Final Fantasy titles or the use of lore within its underdeveloped story line. Spending even as little as three hours on the game, XI players could of expected a very different experience than they did in the last MMO.
There is no argument suitable enough to defend the fact that XIV was rushed and underdeveloped by release.
Content was scarce until the addition of Ifrit and two more dungeons Aurum Vale and Cutter's Cry after version 1. The time in which it took Square Enix to add newer content made it impossible to charge a subscription fee upon release and kept the game in a perpetual beta test.
This would deter even the more familiar fan base from purchasing the game or continue to play it. Ultimately the original team behind XIV were relinquished of their positions and replaced with a new producer and team.
But who knows, I still have a Lvl 18 warrior in Bastok from back in the days, so I might give it a try if it isn"t deleted.
Good luck, tensay You might get some other responses still over the upcoming days, but whatever you decide, I hope you have a good time! Welcome to the forums, btw! Soulcorruptor The corruptor of your soul Veteran. As the others have noted both games do have their pros and cons to them. When it comes to XI I have another question for you as well, do you want to play the vanilla XI or not?
When I ask this do you want to play the retail version and have everything that XI should have available to you.
It's a free version of XI that is run on a private server and has a good community there, people are nice and friendly so if you're looking more for the close knit feel and as you said quality of players this may be a good decision for you. Now while one thing on that list has changed recent with MotM, everything else functions the same.
So at least it's not as much of a time sink and grind as retail XI. However if it's more about the time aspect for you and also wanting to feel a sort of accomplishment, as well as having a larger group of people for the more MMO experience I would then suggest XIV over XI.
I know you mentioned tat you choose XIV as of right now, but if you decide to check out the link there with Supernova at least you have a free one to try for XI and wouldn't have to worry about a monthly sub.

To this day they are still adding little updates to the game. Myself, I stopped playing that well over ten years ago. I only really played it in earnest for a few months before the difficulty this is before they nerfed the game hindered me. I didn't fancy waiting for hours to gather a party to hunt some crabs only for one person to need to head off for lunch just as we were finally ready to do it, an hour and a half later And when you died you actually lost EXP back then, etc.
I've been meaning to do what Soulcorruptor suggests above, but I haven't had time to commit to it lately. In the past year I've revisited the game by watching a YouTuber called Korvana. This person recorded her journey and uploaded the entirety of the game's cutscenes and all expansions, including some alternate scenes. It has been invaluable to me in my research for various articles here, and I've learned to appreciated FFXI 's story in doing so, despite its sometimes convoluted and self-contradictory nature.
And I really love it. I truly care about the story and its characters. The main issue with it, and it is quite a bit issue, is that the core storyline of A Realm Reborn is by many considered to be a bit generic and nothing to write home about, and there are a lot of fetch quests and back-and-forth which put so many people off before they get to enjoy the great stuff. Once you get towards the end of the patches for ARR and then move onto Heavenward, the game becomes a classic.

However it is ancient and hard to get into, and you'll need to look up community guides on how to do things in It's worth playing through to do the whole story and the entire story can be soloed using NPC trusts to help you as long as your skill level is above average and you pick your story job carefully.
Most of the people left playing XI these days are veterans who know near everything about the game, so you won't have that new adventurer feel. XI also only mainly gets maintenance updates and small changes, along with balancing these days. It is fun, the story is high quality and it just got a massive expansion and the player base is as large as ever. It also has fun side content, engaging crafting and gathering content to do and a lot of other fun things.
I play both regularly but if you are looking for other people to play with, I'd recommend XIV. Nugnip Member. Oct 25, 2, It was my first MMO, and I have very fond memories of it. Khrno Banned. Nov 3, Nov 8, 7, It's hard to compare because they are very different and came out at different eras of mmo gaming.
I heard it has no instanced dungeons as you just enter and do them from the map which does appeal to me. Oct 28, 10, I remember the stories where some bosses in FFXI took like hours to beat. Oct 26, 2, If you're asking which one you can blindly start playing in , then the answer is never FFXI. Oct 28, 29, Absoludacrous said:. Click to expand Completely Anonymous alt account Banned. Jun 7, Oct 27, 3, FFXI was tough to come to grips with when it was new. By modern standards it's abysmal to play.
It is rewarding if you have the patience to make your way through the challenges of PlayOnline and the UI, though. FFXIV is accessible and much lower stress by comparison. XI sort of stands on its own. XIV is probably a better game overall right now. Lirion Member.
Oct 25, 1, FFXIV and it's not even close. Nov 10, 2, After they removed the level cap when it was 75 , FFXI became substantially worse. The community is also not as great as it once was which is part of what made the game so good. XIV is far easier these days to get into. Warukyure Member. Feb 23, As someone who's played both games for a very long time XI for over 12 years and still going and XIV for some parts of 1.
XIV is ultimately, the better game, its more balanced in a sense even though it makes it boring for classes, the structure, the lay out and QoL, as well as the default difficulty. It respects your time, it evenly rewards you, as a person if they were to start their first MMO, look no further.
XI, if you really think about it, is a shitty MMO, but if you were there for its prime, it was the greatest community bar none, it had to be experienced. The leveling was horrible, traversing was a slap in the face, the rewards for doing anything were trash, the drop rates, the danger in the world, anyone who thought this was a good game could be considered crazy in today's standard.
Things like your first clears of Coils, or doing savage or downing extreme primals and such, I can't say I've ever felt were much compared to teaming up with your Linkshell the FC's of XI and doing things like Dynamis Lord, smacking Kirin, downing Jailers or even just random fun at einherjar. I bought it on impulse yesterday with all the expansions packs and while its incredibly difficult to get into compared to FFXIV I do want to maybe solo with trusts all of the content since I heard its so good.
So far though I can't even wrap my mind around the interface that requires bajillion key combinations to get to the most basic functions. Thanatos said:.
Pikagreg Member. Feb 5, FFXI has a lot of good going for it but a lot of the gameplay and systems are very archaic and something not user-friendly unless you want to take the time to learn everything. A lot of gear you get at the level cap in FFXI is something that lasts for a long time.
There are pieces of equipment from which is still usable to this day. The game focuses a lot on equipment swapping which makes needing multiple sets of gear a neccesity and there is a lot of different types of content to keep things interesting. It does a good job at keeping players playing and making it easy to get back into the game after long breaks but it does feel bad to know that any piece of gear you get is going to be outdated in a few months.
